$475 per hour for KBA ex-CEO's defense lawyer too high? Not in my book!
Former Kansas Bioscience Authority CEO Tom Thornton is under criminal investigation. Now some Kansas authorities are also complaining they are paying, and paying too much, for his criminal defense lawyers. See http://bit.ly/AsNvsW.
I lack enough information to determine whether it is fair for the state to pay his legal fees or not. But the $475 that white collar defense attorney James Eisenbrandt of Berkowitz Oliver is charging hardly seems out of line. Eisenbrandt has forty years of experience, has been in "Best Lawyers" since 1995, and is a well-respected attorney in a very high-value specialty. Thus, as I discuss in my book "Introduction to Law Firm Practice," it makes sense that his rate would be well above the local median.
